What is The Ardent Harvest?
Most simply, The Ardent Harvest is a blog, a digital media platform for sharing recipes, gardening and organic farming tips & tricks, growing guides for native plants, and other little tidbits of knowledge. It is a place for expression and a place that we hope will someday become a community to share with each other, our separate and shared heritage – First Nations’ medicinal plants, European herbalism, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, etc.
More importantly, The Ardent Harvest is a love story of plants and humans and the reciprocal relationship that has defined our species for millions of years. The Ardent Harvest is a place to celebrate the food and medicine plants provide, and the ways to incorporate more growing, gardening, farming, and healing into our lives.
About Jared & Trevor Ellestad Van Somer
Lastly, The Ardent Harvest is a love story of its two founders, and how they brought it to life. Jared & Trevor Ellestad Van Somer began The Ardent Harvest in 2016 after spending more than a year building a half-acre medicinal garden together on traditional Squamish Nation land, planting & harvesting, sharing recipes for jam, pickles, tinctures, and salves with each other, and taking beautiful pictures the whole time. Soon it became apparent that their days working as a Social Worker and a Public Relations professional in the noisy city of Vancouver were numbered and they shared the dream of getting land, leaving the city, and digging in the dirt as much as possible, all the while sharing their triumphs and struggles with other people, and hoping to inspire them to create a more simple lives for themselves as well.
So like all good parents yearning to create something new to love and care for (whether human, kitten, or business), Jared and Trevor took far too long deciding on the perfect name for their new library of gardening information, organic farming tips & tricks, native plant profiles, and farm fresh recipes. After a few iterations, they finally settled on The Ardent Harvest because they felt the name most accurately captured exactly what they had experienced through their love and plants and wanted to share with the world.
The Ardent Harvest captures the lessons that would become their vision:
- Abundance and joy are available to everyone with a willingness to create a real relationship with the land… and especially those who are willing to genuinely open their eyes, ears, and hearts to the natural world around them.
- Shared experience and education of traditional food and medicine connects people to their heritage and creates a curious community of people with their hands in the soil, all helping to heal the world.
We’re all experiencing the first day of what could be the rest of our simpler, more fulfilling lives… Let’s see where this journey takes us together, shall we?
